Now Accepting applications for the 2016-17 Cottage Grove Youth Advisory Council
The deadline has been extended to Monday, October 17th
The City of Cottage Grove started the Cottage Grove Youth Advisory Council (YAC) in December of 2005 by recruiting students from within the Cottage Grove area to serve on the YAC. The positions on the Council are open to all middle school and high school aged youth in the community.
The basic purpose of the Youth Advisory Council is to advise the City on issues that affect youth in the community. In addition, members of the YAC attend City Council meetings to serve as the Youth Representative on the City Council. They have the opportunity to discuss issues with the City Council and vote on actions with the Council. The City looks to the Youth Advisory Council as the primary communication link between local government and youth on a variety of subjects and opportunities. The YAC is a valuable tool to provide additional input to the City.
The YAC meets monthly with the City Manager and other City officials to discuss a variety of local issues. The YAC meets on every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month from 6:15 pm to 7:30 pm (unless otherwise scheduled).
Youth Advisory Council members do not need to live within the City limits, but must live within the South Lane School District. Member of the Youth Advisory Council have been selected to represent youth in the community from 7th to 12th grade. YAC members serve for a one year term that begins in the Fall of each year and the youth can serve for more than one term.
Youth Advisory Councils have been organized in communities around the state and country to gather input from the youth of the community on local government issues and to educate youth about the operation of local government.
Contact Richard Meyers, City Manager if you have any questions or need more information regarding the Youth Advisory Council.
